How Search Engine Optimization or SEO Works?

Search Engine Optimization or SEO isn’t a rocket science. Anyone can learn, it’s really simple if you are interested in learning, ready to dedicate yourself and with patience. If you are a webmaster, I recommend you to learn SEO yourself. This saves your time and money. You will save your money on SEO packages you may buy to get your site optimized.
SEO-Help

SO WHAT IS SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION OR SEO?

SEO is making Search Engines to see certain things on your website or blog or about a particular web page. A job of SEO specialist to see how Search Engine works in the way of “reverse engineering”, means what particular Search Engine likes and sees web page and to make sure to treat it in the way it likes. To be simple, keeping the only dishes on table Search Engines likes and that too in the right order and with the right balance.
Although search engines are constantly refining how they rank web pages, there are four key elements that still valid and are the basic factor of a successful SEO to get into SERP 1.
The four key elements of successful SEO are;
  • Choosing the right keywords
  • Have adequate infrastructure of web site, Easy to navigate theme and simple architecture.
  • Delivering rich, original and engaging content
  • Getting high quality, on-theme incoming links and references from other niche blogs or websites.
Below is the simple chart showing how SEO is depending on those 4 basic elements.
How SEO Search Engine Optimisation Works

Choosing The Right Keywords

In SEO there are two different types of keywords are used. The keywords to attract browsers i.e. to get users to read the content on your blog or website which is known as “ego keywords” and “money keywords” that attract buyers that are ready to buy from your blog or site. It’s your responsibility to identify and differentiate these is the very first step in increase the Return On Investment (ROI) of your web site with the Search Engines. This can be done using the latest SEO tools and SEO Software.

Have Adequate Infrastructure of Website, Easy to Navigate Theme and Simple Architecture

This really makes difference. Each website or blog on internet is different than one another. Some of websites are perfectly search engine-friendly, but some are not. If your blog is easy to navigate and links on pages are well integrated, SEO bots finds it friendly theme and indexes fast. But the broken links, wrongly added links will spoil your SEO because if SEO bots finds more broken links on page, this page drops from SE indexed page. It’s your duty to research and make sure that, theme or design used in the website is Search Engine Friendly. If you are using WordPress you better go and buy good premium theme. Premium themes are more SE friendly and designed to easy navigation and without any code errors.

Delivering Rich, Original and Engaging Content (On Page Optimization)

On Page Optimization- The way people read magazines and news in a different way. They scan whole page first, and when engage. No one start reading when they arrive on your page. They may save as bookmark if they find it useful. But Search Engines read web pages in an even more different way. In Fact Search Engines don’t read your web pages. They read the script or code that makes your webpage. Search Engines like to see keyword-focused, original content that is offered in a particular way. Please remember this Search Engines are blind, they cannot see images on your website or the “flash” movies. Search Engine “spiders” or “bots” only see the code and text period.
More keyword rich content will get good rank. Always optimize images using keyword related to the article. I agree that, “look and feel” of a website is basically important in appealing visitors to discover your website, but they need to find your website first on SERP right?.

Getting High Quality Incoming Links and References From Niche Blogs

To be simple, a Search Engine Bot sees a link from another website to your website as a vote for your web site. Search Engines give you a point when they see links to your site on other blog or website. They believe that if other website is linking to your blog’s pages, you must have something good to link to and they will rate your page being linked to more positively.
Search Engines today considers some of the factors other than just the number of links to your site when they evaluating your off site optimization :
  • The reputation or “Search Engine Trust” value of web sites or blogs linking to your page.
  • the Theme or Relevance of sites.
  • the “Anchor Text” in links to your site
As you know, now the Search Engines are starting to consider social media references as important signals. And now it’s also proved that, your blog or website’s success has also depend on how your website is referred to from all online sources or off page optimization along with your on page optimization.
This is how SEO works. As I mentioned above, SEO is about dedication and patience. The result from SEO shall take weeks but the good SEO lasts for ever. Search Engines compares 200+ points before they give your blog rank or before they evaluate your blog, and adds 200 more points to compare every year. And it is our job as a SEO specialist to get Page 1 in SERP for your targeted keyword and then to keep the position forever.

On-Page SEO Best Practices

On-Page SEO or On-Page optimization is one of the important elements in search engine optimization that is optimizing your particular page not complete website. On-page optimization commonly consists of your website’s meta data description or Meta tag, ALT in images, creating search engine friendly URLs, using keyword rich title etc.
Today In this article I’m going to write about few major points you should consider in on-page optimization.

1 – CONSIDER INCLUDING YOUR MAIN KEYWORD IN DOMAIN NAME

This part sometimes is difficult to practice, but if you managed to get keyword or key phrase in your domain name you will have better advantage in search engine results. If your targeted keyword of key phrase is already been taken you can go substitute keywords or being little creative to get the job done. You can use hyphen (-) among keywords to make your job easier. Search Engine’s never restricted anyone of punished anybody for having hyphens or dashes in the domain name.

2 – OPTIMIZING TITLE TAG WILL MAKE YOUR JOB HALF DONE

Optimizing title tag always comes first in on-page optimization. Keep your main targeted keywords in first if possible or at least as a second word. I noticed lot of newbie blogger use their blog name in home page’s title tag; to be honest I don’t recommend this to practice. I always suggest to use your main keywords for homepage title and lastly use your blog name. For example in my case I use
?

<span><title><span>WordPress</span> SEO Specialist | SEO | Blogging Tips | Social Media | <span>TechInfo</span> Blog</title></span>
Title Tag Optimization

3 – OPTIMIZE PAGE DESCRIPTION TAG

Page description or Meta description is considered as important as title tag optimization. In a simple word I can say, a Description tag or Meta description is basically a description of a particular page which displays in SERPs. This tag gives search engine a brief description of a page and its content.
Description Tag Optimization
While creating description tags please make sure that you use no more than 160 characters and those 160 characters should reflect all your content on the page. As I mentioned above the description is pulled and visible in the search engine results page (SERPs) and will help your potential visitors to decide visit your site or not.
There is a link between search engine rankings and the keywords used inside your Meta Description, but its not as high as with page titles. So you can add your target keywords in the beginning of Meta Description.

4 – OPTIMIZING IMAGES WITH ALT TAGS

If you are using images on your articles, always use the ALT tag for image description and include a few keywords phrases without fail. This will highlight the subject of the website while search engine index your page.

5 – CONTENT AND HEADING OPTIMIZATION

In order to utilize your work in optimizing Title Tag Meta Tag Description tag, and Image Description, it’s important to mention your target keyword in your content and headings.
  • Add as much as content you can. Search Engines love contents on the web page. Make sure to add minimum 330 to 360 words per article.
  • Write content for humans not machines, I mean write for your readers not search engines. Search Engine should be always your second option.
  • Maintain keyword density of 3-5% of your article total content. For example if you have 100 words make sure to use targeted keywords 3 – 5 times.
  • Use H1 tag at least once in a page and use only once. Use your targeted keyword in H1 tag. There is a link between good rankings and use of target keywords in the H1 tags.
  • Interlink your articles and pages. There are few nice SEO interlink plugins available if you are onWordPress platform. I’m using Insights WordPress plugin.
  • Use H2, H3 and H4 tags where ever required. Use target keyword in those heading tags.

6 – USE KEYWORDS META TAG AND ROBOTS META TAG

Keywords Meta tags are no longer accepted by Google, but Yahoo still uses keyword Meta tag. This is because in black hat SEO spammers stuffing keywords in this area to get higher rank for those keywords. But I still believe that using Keywords Meta tag may help you to get rank in Yahoo! search results. Use limited keywords so that you are not considered as spammer.
Robot Meta tags are used to instruct search engine bots how to crawl your website’s certain parts or page. In default Robot Meta Tags used “index, follow”. But you can use the Robot Meta Tags to instruct the search engines to index or not to index, to follow or nofollow. Available Robots Meta Tag options are:” index, follow – index, nofollow – noindex, follow – noindex, nofollow”

7 – OPTIMIZE YOUR URL

As a final touch-up to your on page SEO plan you will need to ensure that your web page’s URL is completely optimized for search engines. Use target keywords in URL. If you use WordPress platform you can configure your permalinks.
Use above On-Page SEO tips to optimize your webpage for search engines. As I mentioned above your main target is your reader not search engines. Using these On-Page SEO tips your site clearly indicate search engines that what your site is about and its contents also makes easier them to crawl and index.

SEO 2.0 – A New Generation Search Engine Optimization Technique

SEO 2.0 – SEO (Search Engine Optimization / Optimisation) is a technique to optimize one’s website or blog to promote it to search engines. There are several hundred ways that SEO professionals are using tooptimize their website to get in to the top position of search engine’s result page.
In recent years SEO professionals started using new term – SEO 2.0. Term SEO 2.0 is in use since year 2006 and is credited to Clinton Cimring who first used this term in May 2006. Well, in this article I will try to describe few elements of SEO 2.0, including difference between SEO 1.0 and SEO 2.0, techniques, etc. So keep reading this article.
SEO 2.0 - how to

WHAT IS SEO 2.0

SEO 2.0 is a next generation search engine optimization technique and similar to the older generation SEO techniques, but is more into getting traffic or links from social media networks or Web 2.0, getting in-links or backlinks through different blogging Medias, using quality contents, and link baiting.
In SEO 1.0 search engine optimization professionals using techniques including, on-page optimization, off-page optimization, image optimization for image search engines, feed optimization, etc. In SEO 2.0 all those older search engine optimization techniques are used and including some of the latest optimization techniques like; Social Media Optimization or Web 2.0 optimization, RSS feed, News feed and Article optimization, Video media optimization for YouTube like video hosting websites, optimizing your business websites for local business search engines including Google Local search, etc.

How SEO 2.0 is different than SEO 1.0

In SEO 1.0 webmaster or SEO professional optimize his website using content, keywords, meta tags, Title , Images and Header tags but as mentioned above SEO 2.0 is mainly concerned towards social media or Web 2.0 optimization. SEO 2.0 ’s main concern is monetizing ones website using latest on-page / off-page techniques.
In SEO 1.0 webmasters and SEO professionals mainly acts to get links from other websites using Link building techniques. Those Link building techniques are adding manual links in his / his friends’ website, getting links from article submitting directories, exchanging links in link exchange scams (some fraud) or buying links from others. In older search engine algorithm those sites are listed in higher ranks where as in newer search engine algorithm those links looks useless. In SEO 2.0 getting links using social media submission, feed or atom submission, creating link bait or socializing your websites using facebook, linked-in, digg, stumbleupon, twitter etc. For the links in social media sites you don’t have to pay for them and those works better than the older in-link or back link techniques.
In older SEO 1.0 site owners used to get traffic or build traffic using online directories, some answer sites, and the links from other or similar sites, where in SEO 2.0 the traffic pours mainly from social media sites like; Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, del.icio.us, digg, stumbleupon, other social bookmarking sites, news sites, blogs etc.
So, as per my experience the SEO 2.0 is better than the SEO 1.0 (or just SEO), because SEO 2.0 is more target-oriented than SEO 1.0. Using SEO 2.0 you can make it work better for you as it works with your niche market and there is more chances of getting noticed. More traffic from Social media sites is good for your websites. Because of that, your website’s reputation on search engine will increase day by day that too investing fewer efforts than SEO 1.0. So start optimizing your website/ blog / online business using SEO 2.0 and get the instant result.

You need to tweak some of the sections so that your job will be much easier.
Tip# 1 – Keyword Rich Title Makes Your Job Half Done
KeyWord Rich Title
KeyWord Rich Title
Post title or heading of the article is one of key part of WordPress blog. Search engines matches the keywords or phrases used in your title with the one visitors entered keywords phrases in search box.  Your potential visitors may look for better expressive title which helps them to decide to click in SERPs. Never use title for with ASCII characters or fancy characters. Use competitive keywords of your article in your title without fail.
Sample Title:
<?<span class="hiddenSpellError" pre="">php</span> bloginfo('name'); ?><?php wp_title(); ?>
Tip# 2 – Don’t Forget To Use WordPress Category Feature
By default WordPress enables you to use category for your blog pots. You can use as many number of categories to your blog posts. I see lot of people do not use categories and let WordPress to select its default category “Uncategorized”.  Categories are important from visitor’s point of view. Categories make your posts properly presented. Well categorized blog will hold its visitors for longer so that your bounce rate will reduce. Your visitors always hunger about information and they are looking for more and more of it. If they see category of the article on top or bottom of the post they might look for more related posts.
Tip# 3 – Use Header Tags Properly Within Posts
There are 4 header tags commonly used in WordPress blogs. <H1>, <H2>,<H3>,<H4>.
  • The H1 tag is important tag of the post which tells search engines that, this is the most significant thing on the whole article. So, you should never ignore this. As I mentioned in Tip#1, Use Keyword phrases in header tags.
  • H2 is another important but less important than H1 tag. This serves the same usage in WordPress blog.
  • H3 and H4 tags mostly used as subheadings or article or sidebar widgets.
Ex: My heading tag of a article:
?
1
2
<h1 class="post-title">
<a href="%3C?php%20the_permalink%28%29%20?%3E" rel="<?php _e(">" title=" "></a>
In my blog you can see author avatar displayed next to title, you can display this using: php echo get_avatar( get_the_author_email(), ’41′ ); ?> where ‘41’ is size of the avatar.
Tip# 4 – WordPress Permalinks Optimization
WordPress default permalink is something like this: http://www.yourblog.com/?p-123 but this isn’t SEO friendly. The SEO friendly permalink is something you can see in my blog:http://www.techinfoblog.net/seo-in-10-steps-make-your-site-google-and-user-friendly/ where you can clearly see the content related and the keywords I targeted.
Tip# 5 – Using Related Post Plugin Engages Visitors and Reduces Bounce Rate

Using Related Post Plugin Engages Visitors and Reduces Bounce Rate
Using Related Post Plugin Engages Visitors and Reduces Bounce Rate
Using related post Plugins engages readability of your blog. It doesn’t make any wonder in SEO but reduces your bounce rate, the lower the bounce rates the happier search engine! Also, it helps to create dense link structure throughout your WordPress blog. I’m using YARPP by Mitcho.
Tip# 6 – Use Google XML – Sitemap Plugin
Sitemaps are bridge between your blog and Search Engines. They inform search engines whenever you have new or update posts on your WordPress blog. The point of using Google XML sitemap is that sitemaps are crucial part of WordPress blog’s SEO. I’m Google XML Sitemaps Plugin!
Tip# 7 – Add Meta Keyword Tags
There are still discussions going on in SEO community that, META Tags are still alive or dead. But I suggest you to use META tags in your blog header.php file.
Tip# 8 – Create and Use Tags
Creating tags help the search engines locate your WordPress blog. Tags can be one or two words that describe the relevance of particular post. Search engines use tags to categorize, index and find relevant posts faster.
Keywords

Tip# 9 – Optimize Images and Add Alt Tags
A website’s loading is almost depending on its quality and quantity of images. The more un optimized images your blog has the loading speed increases. I suggest you to use .png files and you can optimize them using Yahoo! SmushIT!. There is a Plugin available for WordPress users too.
Alt tags on WordPress blog is like naming it, without an alt tag, search engines can’t tell what a particular image is about. Use your keyword as an Alt tag and SEO your image for image search engines.
Tip# 10 – Add Social Elements To Your WordPress Blog

Add Social Elements To Your WordPress Blog
Now Social Media is booming like anything, in terms of SEO; social media is one of the important and promising contributors. Social media is not only a good way to attract your potential visitors or buyers but also those networks helps you to build relationship with your customers and helping you to get better ranking in Search Engines.
Tip# 11 – 301 Redirects and 404 pages
A 301 redirection and 404 error page is as important as structure of blog. Whenever you make small changes in permalinks, changes in site structure, started using new theme or moved to new host sometime all of sudden, rankings drops or your site will not visible in Search Engines.
TechInfo 404 Page
TechInfo 404 Page
A great way to combat this, especially if you have restructured your WordPress blog with new file names or moved content is to use 301 redirects in the .htaccess file.
This does 3 things:
  1. Tells the search engines that the page has moved to a new location and needs re-indexing
  2. Tells the search engines the page has been renamed and needs re-indexing
  3. Any links that were pointing to the old page will now flow through to the new page via the redirect. As links are an imperative part of SEO, you can’t afford to lose these valuable links, thus retaining good rankings.
  4. The page is no more available.
Tip# 12 – Use Cache Plugin
Other helpful tips to make your WordPress blog popular are:
  • Comment on other niche blogs.
  • Make your blog KeywordLuv and CommentLuv enabled blog.
  • Make CommentLuv as “Do-Follow” allowed.
  • Write Guest Posts.
  • Publish Articles to article directories.
  • Make friedns from Blogging platforms and get to know each others.
  • Appreciate your visitors by giving freebies..etc.
Those are few tips to optimize your WordPress blog. I’m sure that, those tips would help you to optimize your new WordPress blog. But you should know that, only Optimizing WordPress blog will not improve your blog’s ranking, you should write quality and unique contents everyday.
