Increasing Importance of IP Address in SEO

Since last few years, it came to the knowledge of SEO professionals around the globe that IP address now plays much more important role in ranking of a website than ever before. It has become one of the most important factors in the eyes of Google to determine which website should be ranked for a given keyword.
IP addresses are not only used now to determine the location and origin of a website, but it gives Google much more information than that. While giving link value to any website, Google now checks whether all the links for that particular website are coming from different domains/ IPs or not.
Which helps Google in identifying where the backlinks are coming from for a particular website. Therefore building your website backlinks from variety of IP addresses is a must now if you want to see positive results in rankings.
SEO and IP Address
If you own a WordPress blog, you would have definitely come across a fact that there are hundreds of spam trackbacks or spammy comments come to your blog each day. If you examine closely, most of  these trackbacks/ comments are coming from the same IP, which is that spammer`s IP. You don’t need to be happy for these many trackbacks as they are of absolutely no value to your website`s rankings.

SO WHAT IT TELLS US?

  • Gone are the days when you could just build hundreds of your own websites and interlink all of them to make it look to Google as if all of your websites have huge backlinks coming in. If you do it now, Google will easily see it as a spam technique and a try to manipulate search results, which will eventually result in your website getting banned in Google.
  • That you are not receiving links from the same network and same set of websites again and again. What Google wants now is that you get backlinks in a natural way, and obviously if you get backlinks from the same IP address, it would look way too un-natural to Google.
  • Link from only quality and relevant websites count now. So instead of getting thousands of spam backlinks, try to get few high quality backlinks in a diversified fashion.
Another important thing to mention here is that, you might come under Google penalty if you host a website on a blacklisted IP or on a hosting server where there are so many spam websites already hosted. So, in order to be safe from all these, only choose top hosting companies in the world, and try to get a VPS instead of a shared hosting.
